In support of Wayang Village (Desa Kepuhsari, Wonogiri, Central Java, Indonesia), we would like to build toilets and shower rooms for the villagers who currently have no access to the facilities. The Village is preparing to open itself up for tourism and promote their expertise in the art and culture of Wayang (Shadow Puppetry).
This performance art has been developing in Java since the 8th Century and on 7 November 2003 granted World Heritage status by the UNESCO, a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Our effort would help the people who are working tremendously hard for the excellence and preservation of this amazing art and culture.
The Problem
People in Desa Kepuhsari live in poverty and some still lack basic sanitary facilities. Efforts to improve economic growth are taking place, but there are still a lot to be done. The local government still think that sanitation is a "private matter" and should be provided by the residents themselves. Unable to do this, residents usually dig a hole behind their homes to do their "business". They also have to go to neighbours' house to shower.
What you can do:
Building toilets and shower rooms would benefit the villagers directly for their hygiene. Moreover, it gives them some dignity, especially for women who can get really embarrassed during their menstruation. Your support can also benefit the village to speed up the tourism development process. Tourists would be more attracted and comfortable to stay longer if there are toilets and showers available!
You can also pay us a visit and enjoy the real off-beat, off-track, cultural tourism in the village. You can see our programmes in www.wayangvillage.com . With our social business model, most of the money you pay would go directly to villagers, and we reinvest some of our profits to improve the villagers housing condition so that they can directly benefit from our business.
