Hello everyone!
My name is Remy and I'm an 19-year-old transgender theater student from Rhode Island. I've started this page because I've hit a roadblock and I'm hoping to find some help.
As a transgender person who suffers from severe dysphoria (the painful disconnect between brain and body), I bind my breasts daily. This process is very damaging to the body. I have deep scarring, bruising and cystic acne from the pressure. I'm deforming my collarbones. Recently, I developed a very scary new symptom: hand numbness and shoulder pain. My binding might be affecting the nerves in my arm.
I'm currently looking to get chest reconstruction in the form of a double mastectomy, called top surgery. This will remove my breasts to form a masculine chest. This isn't a cosmetic surgery -- it's something I need in order to live and function in the world. The sooner I get it, the sooner I can stop binding, and the sooner the damage can heal.
But my surgery will cost nearly $7,000. I have two jobs during the school year, but they barely cover my living expenses. My student loans may prevent me from getting a medical loan. I am unemployed during the summer and live off of what little I've saved up. I'm looking for another job, but I live in RI -- a state with very high unemployment. Few jobs are to be found.
Starting a fundraising campaign has been a difficult decision for me. I've always been very self reliant and driven. But I've come to learn that asking for help isn't a bad thing. If I save on my own, I'll do permanent damage to my body with my binder before I can get top surgery. Every little bit, no matter how small, means more time is shaved off the wait for top surgery. It means I have less a chance of developing more damage. It means a step closer to being free!
