Earth Without Bees

Donation protected
Hi. I'm Harry, co-founder of Ample Earth. Our organisation make powerful animated videos about important ideas, so we wanted to make a short animation about bees and the disastrous effect neonicotinoid pesticides are having on them - dubbed Collony Collapse Disorder.

Although there are a number of reasons why bees are struggling (climate change, mites and rapid urbanisation) the pesticide issue is one we can change, and that we must change, right now.

The characters have been designed.

The storyboard has been written.

All we need now is your help to raise enough money to get the the film animated.

So what's the story?

The film depicts a future without bees.

A family eat their Sunday lunch - a large plate of plain rice - and reminisce about the foods they could eat before bees became extinct - chocolate and strawberries, tea and coffee.

The focus on food is of paramount importance. The film recognises that the majority of people are not environmentally minded, and hones in on an issue that affects them personally.

Therefore the message is not so much "Please help us to save bees," as "Imagine a world without bees (and because of this a world without fruit, veg, and flowers) and think about how this will affect you and those closest to you."

In this way we hope the video will resonate with a huge number of people.

The final scene will give viewers three on screen buttons to click:

With this model we hope to get the video to go viral and be seen by millions of people.

The animations will be hand drawn by the quite incredible Patrick Smith, winner of 22 animation awards and is Professor of Animation at New York University:

Check out a short sample of his work below:

And overseeing the whole process, we are incredibly fortunate to have Verity White, a Natural History Producer at the BBC who has recently returned from filming the latest David Attenborough "Africa" series (and we are asking Sir David to get involved too - but no promises!)

Former Editor of the Ecologist Magazine, MP for Richmond Park and renowned Envioronmental campaigner Zac Goldsmith has also added his significant weight to the campaign.

And we have a number of high profile celebrities who will be helping to get the word out once the video is made, including:

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

JODIE KIDD

LADY KATHARINE HAMNETT

SARAH RAVEN

AND AINSLIE HARRIOT

And any additional funds above the £10,000 ($15,000) raised will go towards running the social media campaign needed to get this important message into the national and international news, and in front of the people who govern our planet.
