My name is Rain(Yu in Chinese) Yao. At first,I want to say thank you very much for looking at this page. My grandparents are both 74 years old and have been living in the same house all their lives. In fact, I grew up in the very same house in a small village with my grandparents. Unfortunately the house has been broken for eight years. there are leaks all over the house, we have tried to fix the roof, but it didn't help with the leaks in the house. i remembered that one night there was a heavy rain, i was sleeping until I heard a very loud noise. When I opened my eyes, the rain was dropping down on the bed. I remembered that my grandparents didn't even complain about it, instead they just placed a few rice bowls on the bed. I couldn't even begin to say a word to my grandparents. I tried to cover up my tears and all the sorrow within my heart. My grandparents are the nicest people I've ever met in my life. They have never gone to school, but are grateful for what they have. Now my grandpa is not in good health, he has suffered several strokes and can hardly walk. The house is totally broken and I am afraid it could just fall down anytime. I just want to raise $40,000 to help my grandparents to build a house, so that they can live like every grandparents should live.
When I was eight years old my parents divorced. My mother left for the city to find work and my father went to be with another woman. I was left alone to care for my younger sister at eight years old. At first our neighbors helped us by giving rice. It is astonishing to remember those days, and what we went through. Fortunately for us, my grandparents learned of our situation and took us home. They raised us while my mother was away earning money.
They are truly amazing people, though they are known by only a few. They have not lived fancy lives, or traveled to far away places, they do not even know how to read. But they are wonderful just the same. When they were children China was going through many changes. There was a civil war, and an invasion by the Japanese. They also lived through the cultural revolution and terrible famine as well. Along with the country, my grandfathers family was torn apart by the revolution. As a young man he saw his brother leave for Taiwan, he never heard from him again until he was an old man. My grandparents cannot remember their parents names, only that they died during the famine making sure that they would have plenty to eat. They have lived in poverty all their lives. Their floor is rough concrete, and their door is held shut by a an old wooden pole. They have never had comfortable chairs to sit in, or a big comfortable bed to sleep on. Despite their humble circumstances they have never once complained about their situation.
Every morning that I have known them they have gone out faithfully together to work in the fields. They have continued to do this for all these years, but now their health is in decline. My grandfather has suffered several strokes and has difficulty doing even light work. Despite this he insists upon working in the fields so as to not be a burden for anyone. Because of their poverty, and my grandfathers poor health, their house has also fallen into disrepair. Part of it has fallen in, and in the rest of the house the roof leaks. They do not have anywhere else to go, so they continue to stay there.
My goal is to get them a good house to live in. They deserve to have some comfort after all that they have done. They are wonderful people, please help us to give them the comfort they deserve.
