ThePTSDRetreat - Help Troops, Veterans

ThePTSDRetreat.org non-profit organization was founded by D. Nicole Johnson Starr, in September of 2010. Mrs. Starr is a soldier with the Army National Guard and through her deployment overseas, as well as her family's long line of military service, she saw a need that deserved to be filled.

What she likes most about what she does is knowing that a person who has suffered for decades can finally sleep again; can reconnect with their loved ones, and feel they can live again. She loves seeing children that have been traumatized, with repeat deployments by their parents, tell her they feel better, and hearing wives say they see a difference and have part of their loved ones back: thanks to The PTSD Retreat. "Now that fills me with joy!"

ThePTSDRetreat.org creates retreats worldwide for our veterans, past, present, and future -and their families- suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), providing a place to focus on healing and rejuvenation; a retreat from the daily life responsibilities, to connect and reconnect with the most important aspects of life, by getting back to the basics of life, through nature.

Creating a safe and secure places for rejuvenation and renewal spiritually, emotionally, physically and mentally, where all can reconnect with the oneness of themselves, and most importantly, doing this before lives are overcome by the symptoms of PTSD.

The PTSD Retreat does not represent or work for the VA or any other established entity, but will recommend and assist others in working with established entities to receive treatment for and empowerment over the symptoms of PTSD.

All over the United States and abroad, we find men and women serving through sacrifice. They are in war-zones, fighting those with negative and dangerous intent; they are here, protecting the innocent from those with crime on their minds; they are fighting fire to save our children and ourselves from utter destruction. All of them, seeing trauma on a daily basis, are affected. Some are affected so badly, their lives are falling apart. They can't sleep, they can't stop working in their minds, they dream horrible nightmares when they finally fall into sleep from sheer exhaustion; they are turning to alcohol, drugs, and other self-destructive habits and behaviors, even suicide, to erase what is un-erasable; they are isolating themselves from their loved ones
and others; and so much more.

This affects their families, their friends, co-workers, etc. It affects our community, the job market, companies, and remember these individuals are still working, despite all of their trauma induced symptoms. Their judgment is affected; their reaction times, as they become more sleep-deprived, is affected; how does that affect us as a whole? They deserve assistance now, before their symptoms are so full-blown they are removed from doing what they love, before they lose their support structure through family members and peers, before someone is unable to do their job when it is most critical.

But why a retreat, you ask, aren't there facilities already? The answer to the latter part of the question is yes, there are facilities, but they are so inundated with people deserving of
treatment, they are unable to get to them in a timely manner.

The retreat will be working in partnership with these facilities, to ease the burdens on them, while teaching coping mechanisms and other alternate methods to these individuals -and their families- so they can work through their symptoms, while waiting for treatment they need. By, teaching the families of these individuals about PTSD as well, we work to recreate a bond between them, rebuild a support system, and open doors of communication, thus strengthening the family unit. And, please be aware, family is not always a blood connection. Family is also those to which we feel closest, in life, to include friends, peers, and more. A retreat is also non-threatening, a place to feel safe and secure while stepping away from daily life stresses, and giving oneself permission to relax and learn.
