Help Make Jamie's Dream Come True

My Story

Four years ago, I began college at the University of South Dakota. It was a dream to even go to university like that, as I have always struggled with school. However, I was a newly diagnosed Crohn's Disease suffer and was struggling to get any relief from my symptoms let alone achieve remission. The first semester at USD was difficult, I was stressed, and this only made my Crohn’s Symptoms worse. After several different kinds of medications with an array of less than desirable side effects, I was approved to be put on Humira one of the more invasive but successful medications used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases. This wasn’t an instant fix either. The medication took almost a year to work and in the mean time, I was still dealing with symptoms and side effects of steroids that were used to help with the inflammation. The bills pilled up, and despite working while going to school, I could not pay. So the bills sat, and waited. Because what else could I do? I was/am a student; I have no assets, no stable income for a payment plan, and no savings and my student (for emergencies, basic coverage) insurance had already paid what they could.

What Am I Doing To Help Myself

Currently I am working two jobs, one as a delivery driver, and the other for the University Police Department as a student ticket writer. I am also a semester away from graduating with my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with the goal of law enforcement as a career choice. However, even though I am so close to my goal, I am facing a lawsuit over these medical bills. I can either pay what I owe in full, or a judgment gets placed against me.

For those who don't know, the background check for law enforcement is extensive and one of the things that is taken into consideration are financial records. Not having debt and being able to handle money helps illustrate that a person can/is trustworthy and honorable to the agreements they have. But what if the debt that was accumulated wasn’t because of negligence, or lack of responsibility but because of the situation: being a student, working towards a better future through school? Everyone struggles at some point in life, and that is what gives us knowledge, will, desire, and motivation to make the future better.

My dream to become a police officer is driven by my love to help people and be a role model. I want nothing more than to help protect and serve my community. The money you help raise for me will be given back to you through my dedication and my service in law-enforcement. Thank you for your time.
