Salton City Volunteer Fire Department is in desperate need of funds to replace old and damaged firefighting gear and equipment. The department is also in need of funds to send its members to EMT and Specialty Fire Training. The department is now reaching out on social media and asking for the public’s help!
Salton City Volunteer Fire Department has been providing emergency medical care, rescue and fire protection services to the Salton City, West Shores and the Ocotillo Wells off-road park since 1958. The department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to cover approximately 1,200 square miles. In addition to fire incidents, the department responds to all medical aids, traffic accidents, hazardous material incidents, disaster relief, off-road and wilderness rescues. The department responds to about 850 calls a year. SSFD prides itself in being a teaching department that provides training and work experience to its volunteers, many of which use the position as a means to become professional Fire Fighters, EMT’s and Paramedics.
As with most volunteer departments, SSFD relies on donations of money and gear to operate. Much of our current gear is in need of replacement as it is old, damaged and outdated. It costs about $3000-$5000 to fully equip a firefighter with the gear he/she needs to perform their duties safely. The department also needs funds to send its members to attend training schools, such as EMT and fire specialty training. We are asking for the public’s help to outfit our firefighters with safe and functional gear and the training needed to continue to serve our community. Our goal is to raise $100,000 dollars to outfit and train our firefighters.
