Help me become a doctor!

Hello! I am  a 23 year old girl with a dream, the dream to study medicine.

I achieved a B.S.c Nursing in Spain in 2014. Having this qualification means that I don't qualify for student loans to pay my fees.  As a result, I am forced to pay my fees upfront, which are 9000 pounds a year.

With limited family support (due to the economic crisis in Spain) and me just being able to work part time while studying  the options are quite limited.

I have been acceoted by The University of Manchester to start in september 2016.  This univeristy is in the top 5 of british medical schools, which makes my offer an honour.

I am going to paste here my personal statement in which I explain my story and why I want to become a very succesful physican.

A career change is never easy. Moving from Nursing into Medicine is a much meditated decision, I am fully aware of the mental dedication, time, and financial outlay required to succeed. The decision to continue studying and ultimately become a Doctor has been an informed one. I am fully prepared for the work which will be required.

Since an early age the human body and how our fascinating biological systems work together have invigorated my sense of curiosity which, coupled with my preference in a healthy lifestyle, have been the triggers in the decision to go into the health profession. Dancing is a significant part of my life and something I have been practicing since the day I started walking. I believe that dancing and medicine are very similar as both require a high level of motivation, responsibility, courage and self discipline; key personal skills which I have honed during my successful dancing career. Furthermore, both fields are ever evolving and require continuous study, training and research, something that would be seamless for me due to my interest and passion for both fields. Teamwork is another attribute that contributes to success in both careers. Dancing professionally at a local Opera House gave me the opportunity to work with a vast multidisciplinary and multicultural team that produced successful shows which has given me the experience and skills to work effectively as part of a group and take leadership roles.

High academic performance and heightened maturity are essential in achieving a successful career in medicine. When finishing high school in Spain, my high academic performance paved the path for medical school, however, at that point I was not certain enough about it. For that reason I entered nursing school, in order to get first contact with the world of medicine. During my nursing career I have worked in A&E, theatres, intensive care, medical and surgical wards, mainly among NHS trusts. These placements have given me the experience and skills, which I believe will assist in my transition to study medicine, to develop myself and reinforce my decision to pursue a career in medicine. Nursing in the UK has exposed me to the requirements of medical school, the modern NHS and the skills tomorrow's doctor need. I communicate not only with multidisciplinary teams and families but also with, in some cases, confused and anxious patients, scenarios which have enabled me to develop effective communication skills.

As a nurse, I have taken proactive measures, shadowing and assisting doctors in a local Spanish hospital and attending case revision meetings while nursing for a NHS trust. I was given the opportunity to shadow the endocrinologist, attend the internal medicine ward round and assist with medical records. These experiences have enabled me to understand good practices such as patient confidentiality, key quality for good practice as the GMC states. Two of the most important events that occurred during my nursing career was to attend several conferences and symposiums, including the Annual Meeting of the Basque Endocrine, Diabetes and Nutrition Association, and to have an article awaiting to be published on a journal.

I attended the Loretto Sister Institute in Spain, where values like compassionism and respect were encouraged. During my school years I worked as a volunteer in fundraising events to sponsor a school in Peru. A touching experience for me was the ability to support academically a 10 year old Peruvian child with my class.

My life experiences and passion have led me to pursue a career in medicine. These experiences have shown that I am able to work in high pressure environments, as part of a team whilst applying my medical knowledge and delivering quality patient care. These have expanded my personal skills, challenged my perseverance, focus, determination and discipline leaving me with the belief and determination that I possess what is required to succeed as a Doctor.
