HLD May Ecuaexperience 2013

Help, Learn and Discover (HLD) is an organization that offers university
students an experience to volunteer abroad in Ecuador, South America. For the past eight years this student-driven
organization has provided select university students a once in a lifetime
opportunity to participate in a unique and comprehensive program appealing to
their volunteer, travel, and academic interests.
As citizens of a privileged country, we feel that it is our responsibility to give back in whatever way we can, and through the volunteer component of the HLD program we are able to make a positive difference in the lives of underprivileged families. Students will be travelling to the small village of Pallatanga to build 20 homes for these families. It is our intention that the relief of owning a home will relieve the burden placed upon the children of these families to work instead of attending school. We hope that our help will allow these children to have the opportunity to attend school, thereby furthering their education and increasing their livelihood.
Last year with everyone's support the students were able to help build 20 homes. Each home cost approximately $5000 to construct and consisted of two bedrooms, one washroom, a kitchen and a living quarter. This year our plan is to surpass the help provided in the past. However, in order to achieve our goals we must fundraise the necessary amount of money to be able to complete our project. 100% of the money we raise goes directly to the purchase of materials to build the homes, not a penny is allocated towards any wages or program costs.
