Daniel's CGM Fund

Donation protected
Daniel Chapman was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in February 2013 - he was 5years old at the time.

What followed was a steep learning curve, not only for Daniel's family but also for Daniel himself.  Everything Daniel ate or drank had to be carb counted, as this affected his Blood Glucose and could have a serious impact on his health if not managed properly.

Daniel managed his diabetes via daily injections with each meal, but after suffering several severe hypoglycaemic episodes (where he became disorientated, aggressive, and on one occasion, unconscious) his consultant transferred him over to an insulin pump. This pump has changed Daniel's life in terms of the reduction in injections and the social stigma of injecting in public.

They say Diabetics make fantastic mathematicians, and this is very true. Daniel can look at his food and instantly tell you the carbohydrate content. This value gets entered into his PDM (personal diabetes monitor) which in turn tells his insulin pump how much insulin to deliver for that meal.

Daniel has been very poorly lately and his HbA1c - his average blood reading - has slowly increased over the months. This increase can have long lasting health implications and in order to get Daniel's HbA1c under control, his Paediatric Diabetic Nurse managed to secure a trial for a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM). This monitor sits just below Daniel's skin and measures his BG every 5 minutes. It allows us to take control and treat his BG's before they go too high/too low. It also has a function called 'Night Scout' which alarms during the night if Daniel is slipping into a hypoglycaemic episode, which sadly is sometimes the normal for diabetics.

The CGM is not funded by the NHS, and has an annual running cost of £5k - due to the weekly consumables such as the sensors and the transmitters only having a 6m guarantee.

The target figure is to acquire the CGM device, and sustain it's consumables for the next two years.  If you can help this young man, your assistance is greatly appreciated.
