Colin Camp's Care

My brother, Colin Camp, is an amazing person and a true inspiration to many. Colin was a firefighter with the Austin Fire Department for 7 years until June 18th 2013. Colin was an athlete who competed in triatholons, the MS150 and many other events. Colin was a fire instructor at LASA (our old high school). Colin was also an EMT at a variety of events through SWEAT.
On June 18th 2013, at the age of 33, Colin was riding his bicycle home from soccer practice for the Firefighter Olympics, he was struck by Stephen Charles Murphy who was driving a 2000 Chevy Silverado. Colin was riding his bike at about 4pm on a bright sunny day, in the approved shoulder (which is about 14 feet wide), wearing all the proper cycling clothing including a helmet. The driver choose to take Ambien at 2pm and then get behind the wheel, however this piece of evidence could not be used because the police officer did not properly seize the Ambien. The driver was traveling about 50 mph in the approved shoulder and struck my brother from behind, causing Colin to hit the hood, then the windshield then fly over the truck. The driver then drove another 361.9 feet until he eventually stopped. Colin was rushed to the emergency room after receiving a traumatic brain injury and has had to have 4 brain surgeries, including the initial surgery. Since that date, Colin has been unable to speak, walk or eat. He receives his food through a feed tube. Colin receives daily therapies and our family hopes that he will eventually be able to gain those skills back.
During the week of August 10th 2015, the trial against the guy who hit Colin took place. The driver was found not guity and was free to walk with no accountability for his actions which have destroyed my brother's life. My family is devastated by this decision, we cannot understand how 12 jury members didn't find this man guilty with all the evidence provided during the trial.
Colin has required 24 hour care since June 18th 2013. Everything that Colin had built in his life has been taken away from him. Health insurance no longer covers the stay at the facility he is at and now that has to be paid out of pocket, which is about $9,000 a month, not including the physical, occupational and speech therapy that he receives on a daily basis.
