Art, Music & Dance for Inner-city Youth!

I am currently a high school student and I volunteer at a community center called the Overtown Youth Center, or OYC, which is in a low-income neighborhood. I started volunteering there this summer and I have spent close to 100 hours at the Overtown Youth Center since then. I completely fell in love with the environment and the wonderful children who go to the center every day after school or to the summer camp. All the kids have big dreams; they inspired me to start a club at my school to raise money to fund an arts program for them. Though the Overtown Youth Center does have some basic facilities like a dance room, music room, and art room, the arts program needs more resources to give the children absolutely everything they may need to succeed in the arts.
Funds will go toward:
- installing a new dance floor for the dance room
- installing shelves and cabinets in both the art and music rooms to give the children a more spacious and organized space to work
- art supplies (i.e. tempra paint, paintbrushes, pencils, colored pencils, paper, markers, crayons, watercolors, easels, palettes, smocks, and more)
- new instruments for the music room
...and anything else that may be needed.
This cause is very close to my heart because I have been involved in each area of the arts throughout my life. I believe that any sector of the arts can have a huge impact on the kids I work with: providing them with the resources to explore the arts more deeply can give them a creative outlet, which will prove useful if they face difficulties at home or at school. They can also express themselves freely and they may not be able to do so in other activities.
