Autism arises when the cells of the body do not have enough energy to function properly. Energy production occurs in the cells by a part of the cell called the mitochondria.
Most people have never even heard of mitochondria. But, research largely conducted since 2007 has demonstrated that the lack of energy production leads to a breakdown in the ability of the body to maintain itself.

Here's what the research now shows: The autism epidemic is tightly tied to energy balance as the most important factor.
An impairment in the production of energy is a critical factor in developing autism. One way energy expenditure may be changed to favor the development of autism is through the failure to release and process fatty acids from fat cells for energy production.
A number of nervous system factors have been demonstrated to affect the release of fat from the fat cell. But mounting evidence indicates that failure of the mitochondria to produce energy from food may be a more common pathway in the development of autism.
Mitochondrial dysfunction helps to explain a number of the common signs and symptoms of autism, including energy expenditure, and chronic food intake in excess of energy expenditure, and includes markers of low-grade systemic inflammation.
The inability of mitochondria to produce the body's primary source of energy, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is also an important link between environmental factors that lead to the development of autism.
