Nell Angelo's Animals to USA Fund

My dear friend and mentor Nell Angelo needs help to get back to the US with all her beloved animals.

Five years ago Nell moved to Ethiopia with a dream of running a textile cottage industry with an Ethiopian partner, an old friend. Now her company has floundered in a bad economy in which foreigners are no longer welcomed but treated with onerous and constantly changing restrictions and penalties (she must spend several days in the capital city every 6 months, visiting various ministries and paying fees).

After so much difficulty, it's easy to understand why Nell wants to repatriate.  A generous online friend has offered her a possible place to live near Corpus Christi, Texas, where she can have her family of animals with her. But transporting all her animals to Texas is beyond her fixed income. And leaving any of her beloved animals is not acceptable, because this small menagerie are her family, and because leaving them behind would actually endanger or drastically shorten their lives. In Ethiopia, as in many third world countries, there are few house pets, and most animals have short, sad lives with poor nutrition, disease, parasites, and little or no veterinary care.

Nell rescued a donkey that had been hit by a vehicle and was permanently disabled and thus abandoned by his owners. This sad situation is not unusual. Realizing the plight of many working donkeys, Nell connected with the Donkey Trust, an organization trying to improve the care of working donkeys in Ethiopia, and she was instrumental in bringing much-needed veterinary medical equipment into the country.

Nell has three dogs, six cats, two ferrets, and three donkeys (one a disabled rescue, one a young jenny and her foal, who is just a weanling). Most of these animals (except for the donkeys and a couple cats) came with Nell to Ethiopia, and this is another reason why she does not want to leave them behind.

She has kennels to transport her animals, but paying the fares requires Nell to ask for some help from her many friends around the world (and people she has not yet met).

Please help bring Nell's animals to the USA!

This is a return home for most of them, and a new start for two Ethiopian-born cats (Alula and Chilai).

Please contribute to the Nell Angelo's Animals to USA Fund!
