We are in Porto Alegre, Brazil on an exchange with the YMCA. We are working for the next month and a half at a social development center in a part of the city called Cruzeiro. The project we are working in provides day-care and after-school activities for youth between the ages of 1.5 and 18 to help them learn skills and keep busy.
The older students, most between the ages of 7 and 13, spend their afternoons in "oficinas" or small classes of about an hour each. We have proposed to start our own oficina. We want to teach the kids basic photography and writing skills and have them document aspects of their lives such as their families, their schools and their community, which we will use to create a book about their lives. We hope to help cultivate in them a sense of pride and ownership in their community and teach them some new skills, all while having fun and sharing aspects of our respective cultures.
So where do you come in? The YMCA here is stretched for resources--they ensure that every kid has food to eat everyday, as well as activities to enjoy under the supervision of responsible adults, so we are responsible for purchasing all the supplies for our project. These supplies consist of disposable cameras, paper, and markers.
We are asking for small donations of $5-10 from our friends and family in the hopes of meeting our grand total goal of $120 dollars. Thank you for your support. We look forward to being in touch once we have finished our project and we will post periodic updates to this page.
