Renovate the Cooper Square Committee's office space

Donation protected

The Cooper Square Committee is an affordable housing preservation organization on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We counsel tenants about their rights to prevent evictions and assist homeless people with obtaining permanent housing.   We foster the renovation and environmental greening of low income housing in our community, with 15 buildings (over 240 apartments) currently in the process of getting energy retrofits.   In the coming year, we will be managing the renovation of a vacant building to create housing for homeless LGBT youth in partnership with the Ali Forney Center.

Our 1,800 sq. ft. office space, at 61 East 4th Street just east of the Bowery, has not been renovated in over 25 years.  We want to green our office by installing bamboo wood flooring in our conference room and two offices.  We also want to put down ceramic tiles in the heavily trafficked tenant counseling area of our office.  We have a crew of workers who can do the renovation work at a below market price, but we need help with the cost of purchasing the materials and paying the modest labor costs.

We serve hundreds of tenants and host over 100 meetings per year in our office, including meetings of arts organizations, environmental groups and tenants at risk of eviction. Help us renovate our office to make it a place we can be proud to show off to the public!
