Drew's Legacy

It is with deep sadness that we share that Andrew Sammons, 44, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, June 22nd, three years after a cancer diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme.  Drew was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in May 2015, and, both before this diagnosis and throughout his battle against it, he taught so many of us that friendship, unabashed love, and harmony are powerful healers. 

In 2006, after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master's Degree in Music Therapy from Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA, he moved across the county to take a position at Napa State Hospital as a Music Therapist, where he inspired colleagues to appreciate the power of music as a therapeutic tool and patients to boldly step towards progress and well-being.  He carried his enthusiasm for his work into the role of Supervising Rehabilitation Therapist in February 2014.  His love for his career was fueled by his passion for the guitar, which he played honestly, beautifully, and from his heart.

It was at Napa State Hospital that Drew met his wife, Sara, whom he married in February 4, 2017.  His wife is currently pregnant with their first child, Emmett, due on August 1, 2018.  Andrew was excited to be a father, and endured additional cancer treatments and declining quality of life in an attempt to meet his son; he fought to the very end to have the opportunity to hold his newborn baby.

Over the course of Drew's illness, his loving wife Sara dedicated a great deal of time to support him through this journey, during surgeries, radiation and treatment. As a result, she is nearing the end of her paid leave time just as she is preparing to welcome their baby boy into this world. It was Drew's hope that Sara would have a community  during this time, so we are reaching out to friends and family for support. We appreciate your love over the years and your commitment to the Sammonstein family as they embark on this next chapter.
