The Zebra Coalition is a nonprofit organization that works year round to provide services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and all youth (lgbt+) ages 13-24. The coalition assists young people facing homelessness; bullying; physical, sexual and drug abuse; and isolation from their families with programs to guide them to recovery and stability. The Zebra Coalition participates in various monumental activities in our community without much recognition. In the wake of the current tragedy in Orlando, The Zebra Coalition has been working nonstop to support the victims and allies of the shooting at the Pulse Night Club, possibly stretching their limited resources further.
My name is Genna Rose and I am an incoming high school junior from Orlando, Florida. In 2012 I was admitted to a local behavioral youth center. During my stay, I had met countless strongminded young men and women who were faced with complications that they could no longer handle on their own. Many of them consistently spoke about hoping to discover a secure place to express their problems and find shelter after they left the center. When I first heard about the Zebra Coalition I realized that this was the shelter that my friends had been seeking and couldn’t find. Over the past few months, I’ve read multiple stories from former Zebra Coalition members who have voiced that their new-found success is payable to the coalition. Reading these stories is what made me become passionate about giving back to the Zebra Coalition. They have opened so many doors for youth who did not have the stability to do so themselves and are in the process of opening so many more but are in need of certain supplies and monies to do so. I’m raising money for the Zebra Coalition in hopes to provide them with the goods they need to continue providing much-needed shelter and support to the youth in my community.
