Laventille is nestled on a hill overlooking Port of Spain, Capital of Trinidad & Tobago.
Laventille – the epicentre and cradle of the steelband; the heart and soul of a proud musical legacy; flag-waver for creativity!
Laventille – cauldron of crime, delinquency, deception and disempowerment...
But, in the words of our Champion David Rudder : “Laventille, here we come!” ”Out of the muddy pond (let) ten thousand flowers bloom!”
At the foot of the hill lies Success Village, home of Success Laventille Secondary School (SLSS).
Success Stars Pan Sounds – Success is the Only Option!
Success Stars Pan Sounds is the school steelband, proud proponent of the legacy of excellence emanating from Laventille. The band has an enviable tradition of over three decades of achievement at the national level. They have been crowned Junior Panorama Champions and have won the Steelband Music Festival five times, respectively.
Musical Director, Mickiel Gabriel, currently pursuing tertiary level education, is an alumnus of SLSS. Mickiel is a composer, arranger, conductor and exemplar for his players.
The Vision .... Dreaming the Possible Dream
Our vision for the school is to leverage the proud history and passion for steelpan music as a fulcrum for empowering students to become self-sufficient, self-confident and successful global entrepreneurs, trendsetters and music industry professionals.
Thus, a pilot project was implemented in 2012, funded by BGTT to support an indigenous educational software suite designed by Sanch Electronix Ltd. The Pan in Education (PIE) Business Model is a curriculum for certifying music industry professionals. PIE encompasses Music Literacy, Music Production, Technical English, ICT, Audio Engineering, Business and Social Studies. PETE the Panstick is an animated, self-instructional interactive resource, delivered through a blend of traditional and virtual instruction.
The first phase of the project involved building a dedicated music room which yielded a tangible outcome in October 2012 - launch of the CD, Legacy of Excellence .
Now, with your help, we will realize the vision.
The Campaign for Success
1) From Laventille to Cuba...with Success - Get the SLSS steelband to Cuba in August.
2) More than Just Players – Stimulate creativity by building a high-definition music production facility for the students.
3) Brain Balance - Empower the fledgling musicians with Interactive Metronome and Global Mentorship programmes.
4) Now We Making Mas - Equip the band for Junior Panorama 2016.
From Laventille to Cuba…with Success
(Restoring the Dream)
Facilitated by Sanch Electronix the band, as Musical Ambassadors from T&T, was officially invited by the Cuban Government via its Institute of Music to inaugurate a cultural and educational exchange from 22nd - 30th August, 2015. They will perform alongside their Cuban counterparts and independently, in several concerts.
In addition to a second CD, we will produce a documentary on the journey from Laventille to Cuba in conjunction with The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase .
More than just Players
While simultaneously stimulating creativity, a high-definition music production and mastering facility will be annexed to the music room. This will augment skill sets in production, sound engineering, composing and performing with options in Business, English, Mathematics, ICT and Social Studies.
Brain Balance
The third phase will involve neurological optimization. The Interactive Metronome (IM) is an evidence-based, brain-training technology for neurological optimization. It is commonly used in leading academic and clinical institutions throughout the developed world, including primary to tertiary educational facilities. IM empowers:
- Academic Performance;
- Attention & Coordination;
- Control of Impulsivity & Aggression;
- Language Processing; and
- Motor Control & Coordination
Global Mentorship Solutions (GMS), a module of Pan in Education is a tracking system to foster self-empowerment through nurturing and mentorship. Even if our potential entrepreneurs are unearthed, ‘tweaked’ with IM and trained, they still need to remain focussed visionaries.
Now we Makin’ Mas
We will demonstrate some outcomes of this exciting, ground-breaking project at the Junior Panorama 2016 by enlarging the band that currently has instruments for twenty-three players only.
To participate at Panorama, our band needs sixty-five players and associated equipment.
After Panorama, more students will have the opportunity to learn to play the steelpan.

- ‘The Hill’ resurrected as a shrine for ‘dreaming the possible dream’
- A succession plan to create and dominate global niche markets
- An endorsement of Cuban culture as one that nurtures the Arts
- Honing our bilingual skills to deepen relationships with Latin America
- Impregnable interlocking links for the islands of the Caribbean archipelago
- Improved self-esteem and a new vision for the Laventille Community
- Literacy, Numeracy and ICT creating pathways for self-employment
- New categories created for our rhythms in the prestigious Grammys
- Universal recognition of the steelpan as a mainstream musical instrument
- Young role models who share experiences collectively and individually

In order to realise this vision, we need the support of everyone to contribute meaningfully to the self-empowerment of disadvantaged youths through this campaign.
Our success will be self-empowered, self-sufficient, skilled students who can subdue the stereotypes of Laventille.
