Send Steven Luftman to Sacramento

Donation protected
Steven is being evicted from his home by Matthew Jacobs , ironically the board chair of the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA), a government agency tasked with supporting affordable housing. Hypocritically, he is demolishing affordable housing in order to build luxury housing.

Next Tuesday CalHFA is holding its first board meeting since news broke about Steven's eviction. Steven and other tenants are going to tell their story at the board meeting and demand Jacobs be removed for his hypocracy.  The meeting is in Sacramento, but Steven lives in Los Angeles and can't afford to fly up for the meeting otherwise.

Steven needs to take the trip in order to defend his right to a home. In Sacramento, he will be able to tell his story at the board meeting, look his evictor Jacobs in the eye, and also deliver letters to the Governor to demand Jacobs be removed. This is a key opportunity for Steven to fight his eviction and make the case so that others in situations like his won't be evicted too.

Please contribute what you can so that Steven can stay in his home. All funds go direct to Steven for his plane fare.

About Steven, in his own words:
While I have made a living in advertising for well over 20 years, in my heart I have always been an activist, tilting at windmills ever since I could remember. At the age of eight, I wrote president Nixon, asking about the point of our activities in Vietnam. At the age of nineteen, I joined the Alliance for Survival and witnessed for the first time the power we can have if people join together for a cause.

I became a representative of the Mid City West Community Council last year when I could no longer stay silently watching the destruction of our neighborhoods.  When our building's new owners used the Ellis Act to serve us, with the plan to tear down our affordable courtyard apartments and replace them with luxury condominiums, I refused to accept it lying down. I am grateful to have linked arms with other California coalitions fighting this scourge on renters across California.
