My wife and I are volunteers for Honor Flight of South West Florida. Sharon has been doing this as a board member and guardian eight years. I have recently become more involved.
We fly veterans to Washington DC to visit memorials built to honor their service to the nation
Honor Flight Network https://www.honorflight.org/
is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II and Korean War survivors. .
Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation—and as a culturally diverse, free society. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.
The Guardians escort the Veterans on a one on one basis. We ensure their safety and comfort for the entire one-day trip.
The cost of these flights is free for the veterans. However, The cost for the Guardians is not. They must pay to participate.
The cost for the Guardian has risen to $550.00 ea. Recent times (both retired) and the addition of me becoming more involved has made for this request for help. Or goal is to raise $1100.00 for the next flight. Any funds received over this amount will be given to Southwest Florida Honor Flight to be used for other guardians in need of financial assistance.
You really have to experience this trip to understand. It moved me to see the veterans reactions to the very large crowds at the airport. My Veteran and I argued over who was honoring who.
