My name is Johnny Perry and I live in Vancouver, B.C. One of my passions is working as a Volunteer Support Worker in the Downtown Eastside (DTES). I started a Residential School Healing Initiative in September 2013 as I saw a great need for additional support for those wanting to continue on their Healing Journey. Since doing this work I have had the honour to meet so many people from all over Canada and some very talented Aboriginal artists. Many of these Aboriginal Artists are Healing from their own Residential school experience and creating Art is an important part of their Journey.
Recently, we had a very unfortunate incident and we had approximately $5,900 worth of Beadwork, Jewelry and Artwork created by a group of Aboriginal Artists stolen from a major event. It was a very disheartening day as I also was faced with my own trauma triggered as an Inter-generational Residential School Survivor. Funds from the sale of these stolen Art pieces would have been provided back to the group of Aboriginal Artists.
We have exhausted all avenues of compensation and recovery of all the Art work but now have come to a place where we are reaching out to you or others you may know who would like to help. Gratefully, we were fortunate to receive a few private donations. Today, we are seeking approximately $4,100 for the remaining loss to pay back the artists. Anything above our goal will provide us with the opportunity to keep supporting these talented Artists. I have witnessed the impact of the Healing that takes place for these Artists as they continue to showcase their work. It gives everyone a sense of pride and belonging in this challenging world especially with the recent final Truth and Reconciliation event in Ottawa and the release of the final report.
