Robert Needham Memorial walk

Sunday the 25th of January the Village lost someone incredibly close to their hearts in one of our own Robert Needham, Rob was simply Harworth through and through, he touched so many lives whether that be through his talent and dedication to various sports which saw him win Harworth Colliery F.C. Player of the Year no fewer than 5 times, his lifelong work at the Bulbs before closing then going onto be Groundsman and Bar staff at the Pavilion which he loved as he cared for the grounds and the people that was a part of the sports and social club.
Robert throughout his life never drove a car he simply would walk everywhere and it would allow him to speak to everyone he came into contact with and he had time for everyone and people always had time for him, so it is very appropriate that a Memorial Walk is being organised in his honour on Saturday the 8th August
Simon Stones and Steve Grainger came up with the idea to do the Cuckoo way walk as a memorial to Robert and we would like to invite as many people from the Village or who knew Rob as possible, whether it be to walk or cycle some or all of it or just simply be a part of the day, it’s certainly going to be a challenge given the length of the cuckoo way but Roberts Motto was “always give, never give in” and these words will be in everyone’s thoughts during the day especially when the going gets tough.
As well as this being a memorial walk to celebrate Roberts life it will also be done to raise funds to have a lasting Memorial on the Recreation ground for Robert, the place meant so much to him and so to have something that generations to come will see is just right as mentioned earlier he simply was Mr Harworth Colliery.

About the Walk
The Chesterfield Canal walk is known locally as 'Cuckoo Way'. It was opened in 1777 and ran 46 miles (74 km) from the River Trent at West Stockwith, Nottinghamshire to Chesterfield, Derbyshire. It is currently only navigable as far as Kiveton Park from the Trent plus the final section from Staveley to Chesterfield.
There are plans in place to restore the 7 miles between Kiveton Park and Staveley, however the section in Killamarsh would have to be rerouted as houses have been built on the original Canal.
The name Cuckoo comes from the name of the unique narrowboats that were used to transport goods on the canal, Cuckoos.
We intend to set off at 2am from the start point at Tapton Lock in Chesterfield on Saturday 8th August. Regular updates will be posted on Facebook/Twitter so that anyone wanting to partake in a short section will be able to join us.
We are planning to have 3 breaks through the walk, the 1st being at Kiveton Waters Fishery then 2 further breaks at The Lock Keeper in Worksop and The Hop Pole in Retford. It is then a final 12 miles walk to West Stockwith to complete the walk and have refreshments in The Waterfront Inn. Anyone wishing to meet us at these stops to provide encouragement would be much appreciated.
Throughout the walk we will have a support team in The Pavilion minibus, providing refreshments and 1st aid assistance if required.
