Save the SF Veterans Outreach Ctr

Darwin Goodspeed, Health Administration Director for the VA in Sioux Falls, SD, has unilaterally decided to shut down the VOA Veterans Outreach Center (run by Volunteers Of America) where hundreds of veterans, many of them homeless and in dire straits, count on a meal, resources, comradery and a safe place to be Monday through Saturday.

Closing this facility is Goodspeed turning his back on those who risked their life, followed orders and sacrificed mightily on behalf of our country. These veterans served honorably, and deserve every opportunity for a better future, a decent meal and the resources to enable them to stay in touch with loved ones, find work and stay abreast of world happenings. The VOA Veterans Outreach Center is such a place, and the decision to shut it down is a slap in the face to every veteran needing those services.

Since 9/11 the Pentagon has misplac'ed over ten trillion dollars. Gone. No one held accountable. There is ALWAYS money for war, drones, tanks and golf outings at fancy resorts. Somehow, the $180,000.00 per year it takes to repay our loyal veterans with this outreach center just won't fit in the budget, according to Darwin Goodspeed.

I am currently a homeless veteran. I am working as a truck driver, however, since receiving cataract surgery after three years of misery, poverty and blindness. I am grateful to be employed, and my contribution to kickstart this fund to keep the outreach center open is my privilege to offer.

Will you please join me in giving what you can, no matter the amount? Please show your support. Thank you!

OUTREACH STATS:

Per day at least 18 veterans visit the center each day the center is open.

The VA Outreach Center (14th & Cliff Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD) is open 300 days per year, only closing on Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The VA Outreach Center is only 0.024% of the VA's annual budget of 30 million dollars.

Goodspeed is 9 months into the fiscal year and is 7.5 million dollars in the red, which is why he is cutting services left and right...due to earlier mismanagement. The outreach Center has asked for no additional money beyond the operating capital to remain open. The center receives many donations, and the community in general has been extremely supportive, negating the need for more funding.

Closing this facility is wrong on several levels. Let's NOT let this happen! A shout-out hat tip to the Argus Leader for championing our cause!
