When I was 21 years old my life changed forever. I remember that cold March day. I was dehydrated despite continuously drinking water. Lethargic, even though I was constantly sleeping. And my speech was garbled, due to the swelling of my tongue.    At 2:15 pm I was rushed to the emergency room at a nearby hospital. I was an hour away from a comatose state. The doctors hooked me up to numerous machines in the ER, pricked my finger to test my blood sugar levels and called my parents over. Finally, they spoke, ‘Your daughter has Type 1 Diabetes’. Welcome to the fundraising page for YesICanEatCake.com (CAKE). 'CAKE' is a lifestyle Type 1 Diabetes website. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that attacks your pancreas, making it non-functioning and there is no cure. If not treated, it results in death. The only treatment is insulin.  As I began my type 1 diabetic life, I had many adjustments to make. For example, eating was complicated. I was introduced to ‘carb counting’. If I wanted a piece of cake, pizza, chicken or salad, I needed to inject insulin to cover the sugars I was ingesting. I had to learn to test my own blood sugar and inject insulin into my skin any time I ate. That is a scary thing to do when you have a fear of needles. I almost fainted working out on the treadmill not knowing that you must adjust your insulin dosage according to your exercise routine. Learning these and many other new life skills was terrifying, because one mistake could have been fatal. At ‘CAKE ’, we’re going to bring you a different take on Type 1 diabetes. As a lifestyle website, our proposal is to bring endocrinologists, diabetic educators, diabetics, parents of kids with diabetes, and so many more together to convey informative, educational, creative content so you can learn about and feel a part of the diabetic community.  Your donations will support the running of this site. It will enable us to bring diabetic specialists, videos, podcasts, merchandise, recipes, breaking information and more to a large diabetes community. The goal of 'CAKE ' is to make everyone aware of what Type 1 Diabetes is, create a space for people living with the disease and their friends and family  to gain knowledge, information and comfort.
