Corneal Transplant Fund

People speak of everyday heroes, those who give of themselves and never ask for anything in return. Laura Escobedo is one of those everyday heroes. A mother, grandmother, godmother, wife, and friend who worked for decades to provide for her family and gave selflessly to others. She gave of herself until there was nothing left to give, working through two hip replacements, reconstructive back surgery, and other assorted physical ailments in order to provide for her loved ones…and now she is the one in need.

Laura is 67 and has been blind in one eye since her youth. Now, her good eye has begun to fail her and she was recently told that she needed a corneal transplant, as soon as possible, if she wanted to preserve her sight. Unfortunately, even with partial insurance, the transplant procedure and subsequent medicines/therapies are beyond her means. A series of emergencies has made raising the funds, in family, impossible. The initial scheduled transplant surgery had to be cancelled due to lack of funds. She was also denied emergency Medicaid to cover the cost.

So, now, she waits on a miracle to provide for her.

Laura’s wish is not a selfish one, though. Although she wishes for the day she can see the beautiful smiles of her three grand children clearly, if you ask her why she’s desperate for the corneal transplant, her answer will be, “because I need to help out with babysitting and help make the food and keep the house clean…”

*When told that I was creating this Go Fund Me initiative, Laura made sure to tell me that she just wants the bare minimum of what surgery and medication may cost and that any money raised beyond our goal will be donated to her favorite charity, the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
