I want to save the world!
But that's a pretty big, overwhelming job for one person.
Especially when that person is currently an unemployed, newly divorced, single mom of 3.
So how do you save the world when you're starting from scratch?
You save the tiny part of the world that's right in front of you.
I just moved into my own apartment and right away I noticed all the stray, and feral cats living about.
I ADORE animals, and my heart goes out to any animal that needs help. So I decided to see if-with a little help from my friends- I could change one tiny part of the world, the one right in front of me.
Feral cats are a HUGE problem everywhere, but it's even worse here in Arizona. It is estimated by the Arizona Humane Society that there are over 250,000 wild/feral cats in Maricopa county alone! 250,000! Not only do these animals suffer terribly in the HOT summers, but they spread disease, suffer hunger, and injury, and something that most people don't realize is that feral cats desimate wildlife populations. The local lizards, rabbits, and ground dwelling birds, like quail, are completely killed off in areas where feral cats live.
How do I know this? Well, I'm a wildlife biologist by degree and have worked with US Fish and Game, veterinarians, and zoos and aquariums.
I want to end the suffering of the cats that are scrapping by in the wild here and help the wildlife populations to boot!
There are abandoned kittens that I want to take to the Arizona Humane Society,as well as some sweet adult cats that were left behind when owners moved away. As for some of the older males, well, I want to get them neutered so they don't make more babies. It's very humane. They are trapped, I take them to get "fixed," and then they are rereleased back here at the apartments to live out their lives. If they have lived in the wild all their lives it's almost impossible to domesticate them. I will provide food and water for them as long as I live here. But there are fees involved in all these services and programs and I just don't have the income to do this by myself.
Will, you help me?
I know this problem isn't your fault, or mine either, but we can all take responsibility for correcting mistakes-even if they aren't our own, and end the cycle of suffering here in this tiny corner of the world, and maybe even find some sweet kitties new homes!
I added up the fees and came to this amount based on the number of cats and what I think the cats living here need. But any money this makes above and beyond the needed fees to do this I promise to donate to the Arizona Humane Society.
