Landslide In Rabbit Hash

Donation protected
Rabbit Hash KY is a serene historic hamlet on the banks of the Ohio River in Boone County KY. It is best known for having one of the oldest continuously operating General Stores in the country (it opened in 1831) as well as having a dog for it's mayor. Rabbit Hash is on the National Register Of Historic Places and is a Preserve America Community. Visitors from all over the world come here to enjoy a sarsaparilla, shop the eclectic merchandise in the General Store or take advantage of a photo op with Lucy Lou, the Mayor. In recent years people also come to hear local and regional live music or just to take a break on a bike ride.

What most people don't know is that Rabbit Hash is owned, entrusted to and operated by a non-profit called The Rabbit Hash Historical Society. We are a small group of volunteers who's job is to pay the bills, oversee upkeep and perform and pay for repairs as problems arise. In a 184 year old wooden town on the river, these repairs can take up a large sum of operating capitol! We depend heavily on donations to preserve and perpetuate the town.

On June 30th 2015 we discovered that there had been a landslide of the hill behind one of our 7 buildings. The slide collapsed the back wall and caved in the roof, ruining several artifacts and threatening the integrity of others. In addition to repairing the building we now have to build a new retaining wall to prevent future slides.

The conservative estimate to rebuild, rewire, replace the roof and install a poured concrete retaining wall is $100,000. In addition to the damage created by the landslide, one of the major beams underneath the historic store has been in need of replacement for over a year. These combined unforseen circumstances are outside of RHHS's operating budget.

Preservation of this national treasure of a town is the Rabbit Hash Historical Society's mission. We need your help in order to accomplish this goal!
