Pit Crew @ Worlds Toughest Mudder

Hi, thanks for visiting our page.

In December 2011 during a tour in Afghanistan, Mark Holloway was seriously injured in a Taliban ambush.  Significant injuries to his left arm and side required extensive rehabilitation.  Help for Heroes (H4H) played a huge part in his rehabilitation and thanks to the facilities they provided, the expert help they gave and the teamwork and camaraderie of similarly injured comrades, he made an excellent recovery.  So, a happy ending right?  Well…not quite.

Even though the War in Afghanistan is over for the majority of UK military personnel, hundreds of Servicemen and women received life-changing injuries and will need lifelong support from H4H and others.  Mark has made it his mission to pay back some of the debt of honour he owes to H4H and YOU can help him achieve that.

To try and get back to full fitness, Mark took on Tough Mudder in 2012.  Inspired and motivated by the event, he did several more but then ramped up the challenge to take on the World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM) 24 hr event in the States whilst at the same time raising money for his Battalion charity and H4H.  In 2013 he completed 60 miles on the New Jersey course crossing over 100 obstacles in 24 hours.  2014 saw him smash 65 miles and over 200 obstacles on the notorious Nevada desert course whilst battling through 2 sandstorms and extremes of temperature. This year Mark has set a goal of 80 miles and a top 10 finish whilst most significantly, trying to raise £10,000 for H4H.

But WTM is different.  It’s not only a challenge but is also a race and every competitor is on their own.  Almost.  Each participant must have a dedicated Pit Crew to support them during the event, just like those of a Formula 1 racing driver.  In order for him to achieve his fundraising goal, Mark needs to be supported by an experienced and professional Pit Crew of at least 2 people.  But they have to give up their time for free and pay their own way to Las Vegas and the Nevada desert in order to allow Mark the best shot at raising funds and putting his body on the line for the benefit of his fellow injured brothers and sisters in arms.  This is where you can help by making a donation to ensure Mark has the best team available to him in order to achieve that coveted top ten place and raise much needed funds for H4H.

So what vital work does a ‘Pit Crew’ do?

-      All administrative support to their runner as they put their body through hell by setting up and running their pit area basecamp before, during and after the event.

-      Monitoring and planning for extremes of weather during the 24 hours to help prepare equipment and clothing strategy.

-      Food Preparation as those looking to achieve 75+ miles have little time to prepare proper nutrition and hydration. Between laps, the Pit Crew can help prep ready-to-eat meals and snacks and ensure their athletes are sufficiently hydrated.

-      Participant & Competitor Timing.  Between laps the Pit Crew manage and assess different lap data reports for their athlete as well as other competitors to help to plan strategy and maintain consistent pace.

-      Cleaning and drying clothes and equipment so that athletes can make a quick transition into fresh clothes between laps.

If you want to support H4H then you could help Mark by donating whatever you can afford to help fund his Pit Crew.  Without it, his chances of meeting his event and fundraising goals are severely reduced. We really appreciate all your support and thank you sincerely for any donations you can give, no matter how small.
