Cecil Green Arts Rising

Donation protected
On Thursday 28th January 2016 a devastating fire destroyed the 150 year old Drummond Mill in Bradford. For the past 3 years the mill had been the creative home of Cecil Green Arts a Bradford based Arts collective.

The fire destroyed 5 years worth of community art, including all the giant puppets and lanterns that CGA specialise in.  As well as the puppets, we lost all our tools and materials. For 3 years we had a base at the mill which, as well as storage, was used for community workshops and rehearsal space. For 3 years we had a rent free home, which meant that we only had to fundraise for the specific projects we worked on. With the loss of this home at the mill we are faced with having to pay rent on the next space that we find.

We acknowledge that the loss of Drummonds Mill is the loss of 150 years of Bradford history. We are looking to raise £35,000 pounds, which will enable us to secure a new base for our community art projects and create a community street parade celebrating the life of the Mill. We are hoping to raise this money by the end of April 2016.

CGA is a community arts organisation, specialising in street parades and street theatre.  We started working in Canterbury BD5 in 2011, with local people and  organisations to create an annual street parade, 'The Canterbury Carnival'

In 2013 working in partnership in Manningham we started an annual light parade through Manningham park, 'Listers Lanterns', including giant moving lanterns and a copy of Sophie Ryder's sculpture 'The Hare' which until recently stood outside Cartwright Hall.

In 2015 we created 'Jack be Little' a piece of puppet street theatre for the Bradford Festival including a giant 'Green Man' head and tricycle propelled Vulture. We are currently working in the Canterbury BD5 area of Bradford running circus workshops for young people and creative art workshops for adults.

Katie Jones, a lead artist for CGA said: "It is a tragedy that all these pieces of Bradford street art have gone up in flames. We have lost not only our livelihoods but our creative home"

Whilst we are devastated by the fire that has taken everything, we acknowledge that we grew from humble beginnings, building puppets in my living room in order to  join in with a local school's carnival parade. We believe that we can rise again, to rebuild and recreate beautiful community based works of art; that continue to bring joy; to have fun; to raise hopes; to put smiles on people's faces; to create a sense of awe and to continue to tell the stories of the people of Bradford.
