Chris Mellors journey with kidney disease:

Upon return from a couple years of being a ski bum in the beautiful town of Lake Louise, the Mellors moved to the small town of Carleton Place on the outskirts of Ottawa. They brought their dog with them and bought a small house on a quiet street near the hospital. They soon met their neighbours and realized that this was the type of town where they could raise a family.

Chris, after working a few years for Global National, decided to return to school to attend Teachers College. After graduating, Chris went looking for work. In the meantime, his headaches had become more severe and he began to notice that something wasn't right. Upon further inspection and lots of testing with a variety of specialists, Chris was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a genetic kidney disease that tends to target young , men in their late 20s and early 30s.

Chris underwent treatment using pharmaceutical drugs, and the kideney disease appeared to be under control. The following two years went by without many problems. The Mellors had 2 children and were getting a chance to start the family they had been hoping for.

Recently, Chris' headaches became more frequent and severe. During a routine check up with his nephrologist (kidney doctor), Chris learned that his kidneys had started to fail again. The doctors attempted to stop the degeneration of his kidneys, but it was unfortunately too late. After 3 days in the hospital, Chris was informed that he would be starting dialysis in less than a week. The doctors were worried that the progression of his kidney disease would accelerate without treatment.
At this point, Chris is working full time and dialysing 3 evenings per week. He is completing the necessary testing to have a live kidney transplant from his Dad. Without a donated kidney, Chris would stay on dialysis indefinitely which could lead to a much shorter life expectancy.

We are throwing a Father's Day party to celebrate all things Dad and raise a little money for a local dad to help his family during his kidney transplant and recovery. If you can't make it out to participate in the Man Cave Man Show happening on June 21st at the Carleton Place Arena from 10am-4pm and would still like to help out, please donate here.

Thanks!!
