My name is Adam Rutherford and I am the Artistic Director of Birmingham based Rutherford Dance Company (RDC) and Rutherford Dance Company Youth (RDC Youth).

I am very excited to have successfully secured a month long residency in Berlin this coming August 2015. I will be staying at the live in studio, laboratory and presentation space Kanzlei situated in Schererstraße. The space is one of many provided by Institute für Alles Mögliche.
My vision is to utilise the residency for a personal research and development period with the aim to create a self devised solo on myself whilst continuing my ongoing research into Global Equality. I will fully immerse myself in the local culture and further investigate the themes of Human Rights, Equality and LGBTI Equality and relate this to my personal experiences of coming out and identifying as gay.
This solo is a personal goal of mine and would be a significant achievement/milestone in my career to date.
In the year 2012 I underwent two major invasive head surgeries to remove an uncommon life threatening growth called Cholesteatoma which resulted in a pause in my performance career. Cholesteatoma is a destructive and expanding growth in the middle ear with the associated symptoms of; pain, balance disruption, tinnitus, ear ache, headaches, facial nerve weakness and vertigo. In rare cases (like mine) the infection can spread into the inner ear and brain, leading to a brain abscess or meningitis.
After adjusting to the removal of my hearing bones, parts of my mastioid and the ongoing challenge of balance disruption and hearing loss I feel I am now ready to perform again.
This residency will allow me the time and space to explore my physical limitations without any pressure to have a completed product by a set deadline. The solo will feature as part of a new triple bill by RDC for 2015-16.
Whilst resident in Berlin I will also be delivering a three day intensive workshop at the prestigious Dock11 & Eden Studios from the 10th – 12th August. This is also a great opportunity/achievement that I am really looking forward to delivering!
I would be extremely grateful of any help to achieve my goal(s) and for the assistance to bring this exciting opportunity to fruition. Plans have been in place for the past year but due to an unsuccessful Arts Council England application I am now seeking help to make this a possibility rather than cancel.
Funds raised will assist with the costs related to flights and accomodation.
