Monique's MILEAD Fellowship

Hello Everybody,

My name is Monique Kwachou and I have been selected for the Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (MILEAD). I was fortunate to receive 60% scholarship to attend. I however need to raise the additional 40% to enable me benefit from this life time opportunity. Please permit me to tell you a little bit more about myself and my dreams, hopefully you will see this as a worthy cause to support.

I am Cameroonian writer, youth advocate and aspiring lecturer. Upon graduating with my first degree I set up Better Breed Cameroon with an academic cash prize. Better Breed Cameroon has developed into an agency for Cameroonian youth philanthropy: a group of youth giving back to their country by advocating for and investing in youth development and empowerment. I am also currently studying for an MA in Education, Gender and International Development on a scholarship to achieve my lecturing aspirations.

Now, let me tell you a little bit about MILEAD. The MILEAD fellowship identifies and invites 25 young women between the ages of 19-25 from countries across the African continent who display potential for leadership and contribution to development. These young women are offered the skills and networking necessary to make an impact on the continent, specifically their own countries. The fellowship begins essentially with a three week tutorial/workshop in Ghana mid-summer (12th July to 2nd August 2015) after which the fellows are followed up by distance as they carry out a MiChange project aimed at making some difference in their home country. The fellowship has other attributes as well, a noteworthy one being the ‘womentoring’ program uniquely designed to link the young women with influential women leaders and professionals as well as challenge them to mentor a younger woman as well. To sum, the MILEAD fellows program gives young African women the push they need, by believing in their potential, by creating a network for them and by passing on skills from those who have been, to those like me who are still aspiring.
Now, I didn’t just “discover” this program. A Ghanaian writer friend told me about MILEAD in 2011 and encouraged me to apply. I have applied every year since then and I have been short-listed every year since then but unfortunately (or perhaps purposefully) I have not made it through the selection till this year.

I can’t tell you how grateful I am for this opportunity. The MILEAD fellowship has an age limit- 25. I am now 25. This is my last chance to benefit from the boost the Moremi Initiative gives to young African women, to join a network that will no doubt help me in my advocacy work and quite possibly in my career aspirations. I hope you will be able to help me as I seek to raise just enough money by the 10th of July 2015 to achieve my dream of being a MILEAD fellow. MILEAD has generously agreed to cover 60% of the expenses (4,500 USD) but I and other scholars need to raise our own share- 40% (1,800 USD) before attending the workshop on the 11th of July 2015. Please help me, I will be eternally grateful.
