My name is Sam Davis and I’m a 10th Planet purple belt. I started Jiu Jitsu in July of 2010 and it wasn’t my idea. I was a skinny, sickly kid who’d rather play video games than eat or move. My father saw what was happening and made me choose between football and martial arts. Weeks later, he dropped me off at a local academy. I was late for Karate, so they suggested I try Jiu-Jitsu. I loved
my first class and I never looked back.
It wasn't easy. When I first started, I was 15 years old and weighed 90 pounds. I had no clue what I was doing. Every obstacle that Jiu-Jitsu presented required relentless concentration over time to conquer. My overall physical health immediately improved, but for the first year and a half, I got crushed by two girls every night. One of those girls was a year younger than me. I lost my first tournament match 23-0. It was very discouraging. Most people would've quit. The thought never crossed my mind. After about a year, my coach told me that I had the potential to be a world champion and the thought of being able to do what I loved full time inspired me.
Since then, Jiu-Jitsu has become more than a physical practice. It’s the core of my value system and guides every decision that I make. It’s an endless realm of possibility and can be used as a foundation for all of life’s choices. Slowly, but surely, the pieces started coming together. After a while, my thinking changed dramatically. Jiu-Jitsu balanced me and gave me a more focused lens to view the world through. Eventually, Jiu-Jitsu became the center of my existence. It now penetrates every aspect of my life, including my spirituality.
I use my incredible attention to detail when I teach to help my students learn with ease. I have a love of precision that permeates my performance. I aspire to move accurately and purposefully and I teach the same way. In teaching as in competition, I always leave it all on the mat and I make no excuses.
Competition is my favorite part of Jiu-Jitsu. I live to bang heads with the toughest grapplers, regardless of size or skill. I can't stand inaction. I'm always looking for the next evolution of movement. I'm obsessed with progression. I hold nothing back. Absolute divisions are my favorite and win, lose, or draw, I put on an exciting fight with my aggressive style.
