Guelph's Wilson Street Promenade

Donation protected
OVERVIEW

The “Wilson Street Promenade” started as Master of Landscape Architecture student independent study at the University of Guelph. This study examined various design strategies for the Wilson Street underpass, which is considered a historical gateway to Downtown Guelph. Now, we are moving onto the next phase and have been working with the City of Guelph to bring our vision of this student project to life.

This one-day event, which will take place in conjunction with the City of Guelph’s John Galt Day festivities on August 1st, 2015, will allow visitors to envision the possibilities and potential this neglected street has to offer. The pilot project will consist of a small beach, park, farmers’ market and various activities for all visitors, while featuring artistic images created by artist displayed along the surrounding retaining walls. The event will also allow residents to participate by leaving their own drawings and comments on blank canvases provided throughout the site.

GOALS

- To facilitate community participation and engagement by encouraging participants to communicate their responses to thought provoking and reflective questions related to the City of Guelph.

- To demonstrate to residents and visitors how urban spaces can be utilized through the creation of various temporary community gathering spaces.

- To study the effectiveness of temporary space transformation for future development and studies.

- To reduce the amount of waste generated by the event through renting and borrowing materials, and by donating any bought materials to a local community group(s).

INITIATIVE

As university students, studying Landscape Architecture, we are fortunate enough to be entering a profession that helps transform community spaces into beautiful, meaningful and engaging places. We would like to take this opportunity to exercise our knowledge by giving back to the community, a place where they can enjoy, participate and reflect on a City rich in culture and history.

All proceeds will be used to purchase event items, which include but is not limited to: vegetation, sod, sand, rental furniture, art supplies, lumber, artist materials, anchoring tools, etc. Furthermore, at the end of the event, we will be donating the vegetation and lumber to a local organization(s) who could benefit from these items.

DONOR RECOGNITION
