Wildlife Center Eagle Flight Cage

Donation protected

The Wildlife Care and Rescue Center ( 501(c)3 ) was formed to assist orphaned, sick or injured native wildlife.  Since our start in March of 1994, thousands of wild animals have passed through our hands.  We have shared in some setbacks such as Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill.  Through our passion and determination, we have continued to serve and grow.  Over the last few years, the majestic Bald Eagle has recovered from the effects of the pesticide DDT to soar in our skies once again.  As their population increases in our region, we also respond to more calls to help downed eagles.  To serve their recovery best, we need improved facilities.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service requires that we meet specific caging regulations in order to keep and maintain eagles during rehabilitation.  Recovering Bald Eagles need to strengthen their flight muscles to ensure a successful release back into the wild. The enclosures are very large and most wildlife centers are unable to construct them. Only a handful are available in the south.  None currently exist in Mississippi.  For the last few years we have been required to transport our eagles to a facility in Florida and we want this to change.

The minimum requirement size is 100 feet long by 20 feet wide and 16 feet high.  We want to build our eagle cage 120 feet long.  After all, bigger is better.  This structure has to be as sturdy as a house and be built to last a long time.  It must also withstand strong winds since we live in an area prone to tropical weather patterns. Through the assistance of our neighbors in Florida, we have gotten excellent advice about building an eagle flight cage.  We have obtained an estimate of $20,000 to purchase the materials needed.  This is approximately the same cost our friends in Florida paid to build theirs.

We are asking for your help to make this necessity a reality.  Please consider donating to the WCRC so we can assure these symbolic birds of prey remain a part of our Mississippi skies. Your donation is 100 percent tax deductible
