Warm Kitty Feral Cat Shelters

I'm a crazy cat lady. I would take them all in if I could.
But I can't.
However, I can help some of them get through the winter. Feral cat shelters are easy to make and they save little critters' lives. While they're not terribly expensive to make, we're struggling a bit financially, and we just don't have the extra cash to bankroll a project like this on our own.
This winter is slated to be a bad one, and while my furry little knuckleheads have a warm house, fully staffed with human servants, feral cats aren't so lucky. They've got nowhere to go, no one to take care of them, and little resistance against the cold. Cats descended from desert animals. They're not designed to live in freezing temperatures. They're susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. It's not safe to assume they'll be all right this winter just because they have a fur coat.
So I'm going to make feral cat shetlers with some help from my friends. I'm going to place a few shelters in my back yard. The rest are going to be distributed as follows; to the people who helped me build them, to no-kill shelters and fosterers who may have need of them, and to anyone else who could use one.
The materials we're using are: a styrofoam cooler, a plastic tub, straw for bedding, and a little bit of diatomaceous earth for flea control. It's harmless to cat-sized things, but deadly to little irksome bugs.
The estimated cost per shelter is about $15. That's without factoring in gas and/or cab fare. We'll make as many as we can or until there is absolutely no one in our area who needs one. Once we've got the materials, we can get started, and I'll post pictures of our progress. Hopefully I'll be able to get a few shots of a feral cat enjoying the new digs.
