Riverhead Community Garden Mosaic
Donation protected
JumpstART evening was quite a success....
Many people came out for the evening of free public art and many participated in laying tiles for the stones. The project will be continuing on now until the stones are completed and will then be installed at the Garden. I am continuing to fund raise to meet the campaign goal, so excited I am almost there!! To date, $1907 has been raised toward the 2500 goal. East End Arts grant will add another 500, so I am just shy of 200.00....awesome!! Any amounts over will be kept in a fund for future mosaic community projects.
First stone's been done....really happy how tue volors came out!!
Libby Hintz, mosaic artist herself, volunteered to help with her teaching expertise. We met a few years ago in Brooklyn at a Community Mosaic Workshop facilitated by Laurel True. Thanks Libby!!! Spreading the word about mosaics on the East End of Long Island :)
Joe Maguire, of New York Life, an exceptional insurance agent. He was my Business Sponsor and was there offering free Child ID Bracelets... Joe goes above and beyond for his clients.... Donated use of his tent in addition to financial support. Thanks Joe!!!
Demonstrating how to cut the tiles to lay them in...

I was selected as a 2015 East End Arts JumpstART Artist. JumpstART is a professional development program that develops connections between business and the arts via creative placemaking resulting in the vitalization of communities. JumpstART culminated in an evening of free public art in downtown Riverhead August 7, 2015.
The River & Roots Community Garden in Riverhead will be the recipient of a Mosaic Art Stepping Stone Pathway leading from Main Street sidewalk to the Community Garden.
This is a rendering of where the stones will be leading to the garden.
We were set up in front of the Community Garden just off Main Street August 7th, where anyone from the community and beyond is invited to participate in creating the mosaic stones. Learn some of the process of mosaic making as we make this lasting symbol of a "Community Intertwined".
I am raising money to help pay for the cost of materials, labor and installation. East End Arts Grant Program will match dollar to dollar, up to $500, for any monies raised. Please message me if you would like to see a detailed budget.
Creating Community Art brings a sense of ownership and pride to a place and this pathway will bring distinctiveness to the Garden, allowing for continued future works to make the space a recognizable Riverhead landmark, rather than an overlooked space. Many are not even aware of the Garden and its space. 7 garden stones will be created with a design that is a series of overlapping vines. A large central vine in purple represents the Arts. Smaller, colorful vines intersecting and overlapping the main vine, symbolize various Riverhead Community members such as Youth, Seniors, Business Owners, Farmlands & Vineyards and Bays & Marinas. A header stone will read RIVER & ROOTS and a footer stone nearest to the Garden, COMMUNITY GARDEN.
As a mosaic artist, I have seen and participated in the powerful connections mosaic making creates when groups of people come together to make a mosaic. Fragments are put together to create a whole, just as individuals come together to create a community. In fact, I was inspired to create the River & Roots Community Garden Mosaic, having participated in the Society of American Mosaic Artists Mosaic Marathon, which created a mosaic mural that was donated to an elementary school in Philadelphia. I was also inspired by Isaiah Zagar's Community Workshop , with his unique system for creating murals :)

Mission statement
To find the creative potential in unnoticed or overlooked places creating works using mosaic art that express distinctiveness and add to the aesthetic of places, bringing a sense of joy, beauty and excitement.
Being accepted as a JumpstART artist is the culmination of a dream to bring public mosaic art to the East End of Long Island. The power of art knows no bounds in bringing beauty and vitalization to a place.
About Me
My mosaic story began about 5 years ago as I searched for a medium to which I felt connected. Mosaics kept calling to me. Detail, pattern and texture find their home in the creation of mosaics. Shiny/dull, rough/smooth, dark/light, all blend together, allowing me a place to explore works that are compositions in contrast. Creating with small pieces has a long history and tradition, yet I find inspiration in contemporary abstract exploration, focusing on texture, shape, size and color, mixing a variety of materials. Natural elements of glass, stone and cement complement one other. There is a luminous quality in tesserae that changes in relation to your view. Forming mosaics is a process that takes patience and precision, yet the result can be extremely fluid and organic.
