SF is an online community dedicated to providing a safe environment for people experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings, and for those who wish to help support these people. The Centers for Disease Control reported that In 2013 (most recent completed data) 41,149 suicides were reported, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death in the US meaning someone in the US died by suicide every 12.8 minutes.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which represents a global mortality rate of 16 people per 100,000 or worldwide one death every 40 seconds from suicide.
SF is an online peer to peer support site that has provided a safe place for people that are experiencing suicidal thoughts to talk and to be heard by other that understand these feelings and to be offered support, encouragement, and practical advice on how to get help, feel better, and choose other alternatives. SF has been running since 2004 making it one of the oldest support sites on the internet, and has helped over 40,000 registered members in the last 11 years that came to get help and and lend support to others.
We have a solid history of being a well moderated safe environment with rules that ensures member the ability to talk and express themselves without endangering other members by being a 100 % pro-life support site. Our site Ethos make the principle clear-

SF is a pro-life peer to peer support forum for people in crisis. We do not provide or share Methods on how to harm ourselves. Do not share or ask for Methods to harm yourself. Suicide Pacts are viewed as encouraging suicide and therefore strictly forbidden. Discussion supporting or encouraging anything that is generally considered illegal in the UK, USA, or Australia is not allowed.
We have members from all over the world and our all-volunteer staff comes from 3 continents. We are supported entirely by donations. We, unlike other sites, do not allow or sell any advertising to pay for the day to day cost of servers, bandwidth, and licensing of software used. This is to make for a better user experience without pop-up advertising, as well as ensuring it is clear we are completely independent and impartial. We receive minimal donations and the bulk of costs are paid by a few members of staff each month.
One of the key pieces of our support is an active online chat room so people can always find somebody to talk to. Our current chat system is Java Based, which while working well for years is no longer supported on many computers and major browsers including Google Chrome have announced they will not support Java in the future. Purchasing new chat software and the necessary coding to implement it into our site is one of the primary reasons for this fund raiser.
Also, Vbulletin 4 has been our forum platform for 11 years. It no longer meets the needs for our continued growth and will require updating by the purchase of new plugins, or changing platforms entirely. This is another substantial additional expense that cannot be paid entirely by the few volunteers that contribute to keep monthly expenses covered. We have volunteers that are able to do the majority of all site maintenance and a webmaster that runs our own server to keep costs as low as possible, but for the upgrades we want to bring the site up to date (for example having recently switched to a secure https) we are asking for one time donations from any that can help.
Unlike our regular donations through PayPal that show up as “Suicide Forum” on bank and credit card statements, donations here will show a discreet Go Fund ME and/or SF Upgrades campaign. The amount we are trying to raise to complete the upgrades is bar minimum and any additional unexpected costs will be paid by our regular donations (which are primarily from several members of staff, and a few wonderful caring members that choose to donate discreetly).
Small $5 or $10 dollar (or even $2) donations all help!! We ask only what you can easily afford and if it is not $20 we fully understand. You can choose to donate anonymously or have it show your member name as the donor as you like. We have thousands of members, over 1800 members active and signed on in the last 30 days so if all that can donate without causing themselves hardship donate just a few dollars even we will meet our goal very quickly and you will see the changes implemented very quickly so can see where the money went and enjoy the better chat and more secure forum platform.
