Voluntown Public Library Addition

Donation protected
The library in Voluntown CT, a small town in Connecticut on the border of Rhode Island, aims to be a center of the community, however, with no meeting room and no dedicated children’s room, this is difficult to achieve. This library is also lacking an adult room large enough for both materials and seating, a young adult room, office supply storage room and a staff work room.

When the library was constructed in 1996 in a vacant post office by volunteer labor, it was quite an improvement from the small room in the town hall it had used for many years. But, as the community grew, so did the library’s collection and the community’s library needs, such as programs for seniors, young adults, and children.

What then seemed a spacious building quickly filled up. Over time, additional bookshelves were added, making small rooms even smaller.

The library is proposing an addition to address these issues, and you can help by reading on.

The proposed addition would have:

·         a dedicated children’s area

·         a young adult area

·         an adult area

·         a community room with its own entrance, restroom and kitchen.

·         as many renewable “green” building materials as possible, including solar panels for electricity and geothermal heating and cooling.

The current building will be remodeled to house a new circulation area as well as a media room.

Town residents and government fully support this library improvement. They know that:

·         library patrons would have comfortable spaces to work, read, sit and socialize

·         library programs, scouts, seniors, town committees and clubs would have a spacious meeting room

·         handicapped patrons would have easy access to all materials

·         the children’s room wouldn’t be shared with adults, adult computers or meetings.

·         the staff would have suitable and adequate workspace.

We are halfway to our monetary goal of $800,000. We recieved a grant of 402, 700 and need matching funds by November 2016 before the money will be released.  If we do not have the matching funds, we will lose the grant.
