ArtStART: Mentoring Emerging Teenage Artists

ArtStART: Mentoring Emerging Teenage Artists, is a professional development program created in February 2015, by ceramic artist Cheryl Brown. Ms. Brown is a Fort Lauderdale artist, arts and education advocate, and activist committed to shaping the culture of her local community. ArtStART helps secure the continued growth of local arts.
The ArtStART program currently works with Broward Public Schools students in grades 10-12. ArtStART offers “career-track” teen artists an opportunity to showcase their talents in an art exhibition in downtown Fort Lauderdale’s FATVillage Arts District during the monthly Artwalk.
Through ArtStART workshops, the young artists learned how to create art presentation documents, put together an art exhibit, and curate an art exhibit with multiple artists. The program culminates with a “real world” exhibit where their new skills are put into practice.
“Mentoring students helps to grow the local art culture,” Brown explains. “The best way of keeping young talent in their home communities is to remind them what these communities have to offer. ArtStART demonstrates that there is a place for them in our local art culture, and it teaches them how to secure this place.”
Funding for this project is provided in part by the Broward County Board of Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. ArtStART 2016 is a collaboration with Broward Schools and ArtServe, and is supported by FATVillage, Art Trax Studios & Gallery, the Girls’ Club, and other local artists.
Donations of any amount will help secure the future of ArtStART: Mentoring Emerging Teenage Artists, and support the new traveling exhibit consisting of selected works.
