From Channel 5 re: Louie Vaccaro story.
" Ok, it's a go. Story on Louie is running tonight. I actually have two stories airing @ 6pm and it will be the second one. Thanks for everyone's patience.
After much ado, Allen from Channel 5 just told me that his producers said the story about Louie would run tomorrow (Friday) at 6:00pm (for sure!)
Channel 5 just pushed Louie's story back again to Thursday or Friday. FYI
Mark your calendar for March 22!
Allen Martin of Channel 5 News will be doing a segment on Louie's story tomorrow night (Wednesday) on the 6:00 news! Check it out!
Louie had a little set back last night, but he's perfectly fine.
Part of Louie's occupational therapy is learning to do small wheelies in his new wheelchair. The therapist explained that when he's in a normal environment the small front wheels of his chair will inhibit him from going over bumps and curbs, etc. Louie's chair has wheelie bars on the back that adjust to give the patient the control to customize the amount that the chair will lean back to fit their individual need (as everyone is different.). Learning the wheelie skill is a very important part of his therapy.
On Saturday (while both Mom and Dad were away for a short time,) Louie had friend's visiting. Louie has no control of his core as a paraplegic and tends to fall forward while trying to eat if his chair is not adjusted properly. He asked his friends to adjust the wheelie bars so he could lean further back and be more comfortable. They did as he asked without thought and no one thought to test how far back the chair would lean after the adjustment.
Later that evening, Louie's Dad returned with dinner and to be with Louie for a bit. Chris was sitting on the bed watching tv with Louie when Louie's chair fell backwards. He got a 1 inch impact cut on his head and was fine. But because he is in a rehabilitation center, they had to follow protocol and did a CT Scan and treated the cut with staples.
We wanted to be clear as to the "truth" about what took place to minimize any rumors or "blaming". Louie was simply trying to make himself more comfortable and should have asked someone to stand behind the chair to test it after the adjustment. But he's a 16 year old boy and isn't accustom to these kinds of responsibilities yet. He's learning and fortunately was not seriously injured.
We are just over half way to our goal! Wow! We are so humbled by your love and support. Thank you so much!
Channel 5 completed their interview with Louie and is running the story about the accident and the town's amazing support on Friday!! :-)
Be sure to watch it!
Louie Vaccaro is COMING HOME in MARCH! The target date is March 6, but may be a little longer as the more rehab the better.
Did you know that home nursing care is not covered by standard insurance? And who takes out long term (nursing home) insurance for their kids? No one I know! This is one of the main reasons for fundraising for this family. Louie will need nursing help for a very long time...possibly for life.
We've raised a good amount of money, but in all honesty, it's a drop in the bucket for what will be needed. Let's not stop now! Come and support these events!
3/8 - Naves in Fairfax will be hosting a fundraising event coined "Pitch on for Louie!" $20 at the door.
Naves Bar has dollar bills on the ceiling. They've been there for many many years. Between now and 3/8 stop into Naves and pitch your bills on the ceiling! $1, $20, $100, whatever feels right to you! The party will start at 4:00 and go until closing! There will be lots of food drinks and good music. At the end of the event, all the proceeds will go to the Vaccaro family. And the money on the ceiling? That's coming down and going to the family as well!
So come and join in on the fun!
NEXT UP?! The Native Sons are hosting an awesome event at the Fairfax Pavilion on MARCH 22! Music by BESO NEGRO and NEXT!! Bring the family! There will be lots of food including a pig roast, beer and wine and much more! Raffle prizes and t-shirts for sale too!! Go to www.vaccarofund.org

I announced that Banana's At Large was donating a very nice guitar for a raffle prize at the Deer Park event. I need to make a correction. They pulled out because they wanted promotion on the benefit posters in exchange for the donation. "None" of the other 100 donors asked for promotion under these circumstances and the posters were already made when they offered. So we will not be able to honor that announcement. Sorry.

Louie had a tracheotomy yesterday and the procedure when well. This is good, in that he will be more comfortable and bad in that we had hoped he would be able to breathe on his own. The procedure means that the doctors feel that Louie will be reliant on a ventilator for at least 2-3 months. On a positive note, Louie had sensations of touch on his feet, legs and abdomen. This is potentially very good news. It does not mean that Louie will walk again, but its a huge step in the right direction. Visitation is still "off limits", especially while he is recovering from his tracheotomy. Chris and Miles would like to once again extend their thanks for all the continued love and support.
The fundraiser at the Sleeping Lady last night was a wonderful success. We raised over $1,600 for the Vaccaros and $500 for Dameon Reeder. Thank you to those that made it out for this event! Let's keep going!

Unfortunately Louie has not bounced back as we had hoped. He is still on and off life support and breathing with a breathing tube. Because this is uncomfortable for him and causes other problems, the doctors decided to do a tracheostomy. This is a procedure where they create an opening in his neck where they place a tube for an airway to breath from. This will also help with removing some of the fluids from his lungs in an easier fashion. Our hope is that this will only be necessary for 2 or 3 months. However only time will tell.
He was moved yesterday and is resting at the Terra Linda Kaiser. Unfortunately no visitations are alowed at this time.
Thank you all again for the wonderful support. We will post again soon.
We had a little encouragement today in a series of very difficult days. For the first time today, Louie was awake, with his breathing tubes in and seemed to be in less pain. Usually this is a very uncomfortable state for him so we feel encouraged that he was given a small respite from it's severity.
There has been a slight change of plans and he will be transported to Kaiser in Terra Linda for a short time period. After that he will be moved to Redwood Ciity. He is resting now back under sedation.
Our first fundraiser at Druids Hall in Nacasio was a great success! Thank you so much to all that participated! We love you very much.
The next event will be on Thursday, January 9th at the Sleeping Lady. We hope to see you there!
January 9th! Thursday night at the Sleeping Lady in Fairfax! A Fundraising event for the Vaccaro Family!
9pm - 11:30. Come join the fun!
To the friend's of the Vaccaro Family:
I went to see Louie (and Chris) today. It looks like they will be transporting him to a long term care facility in Redwood City where they specialize in nureology. We had hopes that he would be able to be removed from life support before the move, unfortunately that is not possible at this time. So the move will be made while on life support. Miles will ride in the ambulance with Louie and Chris will follow. This is disappointing for Louie's friends of course. Especially the friends that don't drive. However, our hope is that in time Louie will be able to move to a facility in Terra Linda which would be much closer. Redwood city is a little distance but we are grateful that the Bay Area has such wonderful medical care and he does not have to be transported to another state, which happens in many if these cases.
Thank you for your continued support and many prayers. You are all truly amazing and these families could not get through this without you.
There are events happening now or in the planning stages so keep an eye open for the dates! Please contact Dianne Zellers on Facebook or at firstname.lastname@example.org if you can donate raffle prizes or help with an event!

It has just been brought to my attention that the Drake Winter Dance is on the same day as our Sleeping Lady fundraiser. We will choose another date and let you know as soon as possible.
Hi everyone. Thank you so much for all of your comments and encouragement. We are truly grateful for all of you!
I'm posting to give you the latest update from Chris on Louie's condition.
Unfortunately we need to cease any visitations for now. Louie needs rest. He is bouncing back from pneumonia and a procedure for a collapsed lung, which are very common occurrences for individuals on life support. However the process is uncomfortable and he is in pain when he is awake. He is being woken up for tests, doctors, nurses to be turned etc., on a regular bases and visitors tend to wake him when rest is already limited. For the time we will be stopping all visitations except family and a couple of very close friends and hope you understand.
We have been getting a lot of questions about the possibility of Louie walking again. For the moment, our main concern is helping Louie to "breathe" on his own. This is our number one priority and the first hurdle on the list of many. We aren't focused on the walking issue at this time.
We have not been able to completely remove him from breathing machines because his diaphragm has been compromised and is not currently doing it's job properly. We believe that with time this will improve and Louie will be able to breathe in the future without the use of mobile breathing equipment. Again, this is our main focus at this time and our hope.
Once Louie can be remove from breathing tubes, his lungs will be less susceptible to infection and fluid will be reduced, minimizing the need for the uncomfortable process of turning him. We are encouraged that the doctors feel confident that he should be breathing on his own by this weekend and his surgeon's visit today was positive.
At this time, Louie cannot communicate, which is frustrating at best. However, once the tubes are removed he will be able to express his needs. This will solve many problems.
On behalf of the Vaccaro family, thank you so much everyone for your prayers, donations, calls, messages and mostly for your love.
We will be hosting several fundraising events throughout the year, the first of which will be at the Sleeping Lady on 2/1/14. Please mark your calendar and we hope to see you there.
Thank you so much for the beautiful messages with your donations. Larry and I (Dianne) have been sending thank you messages on behalf of Chris & Miles for the time being. But please know that I will sit down with them and share every one of your messages when they feel emotionally ready to read them. At this moment, that's still a little hard for them. But your prayers and messages are greatly appreciated.
It is very humbling for anyone to ask for help. However, we are very close friends of the Vaccaro family and know that they are in need. We would like to ask that you consider donating to this fund.
On Christmas Eve Louie Vaccaro, a Sophomore from Drake High School went out with a group of his closest friends after family celebrations. These kids are very close and love each other very much. They were driving at night on Lucas Valley Road and a terrible accident occurred. The large SUV was filled with 6 passengers (4 Drake students, 1 former Drake student and Louie's cousin visiting from Florida for the holidays.) The vehicle rolled several times and the injuries are serious.
Louie Vaccaro shattered 1 vertebra and blew 2 discs in two additional vertebra. Another passenger (Dameon Reeder) has a fractured spine and Marco Domitri has a broken collar bone. All the passengers have some minor injuries additionally as well as emotional trauma. However Louie's injuries are the most severe and is the focus of this funding website. We are working to assess the needs of the other kids and have offered to help them as well. Stay tuned for an additional information on their needs as well.
Louie has been on and off life support and in an induced coma for the better part of the week since the accident. Our hope is that he can begin to breathe on his own and can be taken off of breathing tubes and life support soon. His surgery took about 11 hours. The doctors have given a 10% chance of Louie walking again, but we've seen miracles and are very hopeful that this will increase as his condition improves. He is currently (12/31/13) at Marin General Hospital, however his care will be moved soon to a facility more suited for long term care in either Redwood City or Terra Linda.
The purpose of this website is to raise money for Louie's family as the needs will be ongoing for "years" and the costs will be overwhelming. The website will also provide an arena for medical updates, a place to communicate with the community, a place to post a Wish List for needs to be met, and a site that you can share with your networks to help spread the word. We will also be launching a public calendar where we will schedule fundraising events, needs to be met, visitations, etc.
Thank you once again on behalf of the Vaccaro Family. We hope to see you at an event soon.
