I need your help! I may have reached a major turning point in the progression of my Muscular Dystrophy. I can no longer stand.
I started this campaign with an initial need of a new power wheelchair. Thanks to the exceptional generosity of many, this is covered. This is AWESOME!
Since I spend 99% of my time in the house, there are many updates and modifications needed. I think the next focus should be the bathroom.
Along with a $9,000+ ceiling lift, the entire bathroom needs to be rebuilt to accommodate my current and near future needs. The idea is that I be able to use the shower and commode without any assistance. Some special design will be needed and may require custom construction. The sink/vanity will need to be a "roll under" design, currently I pull up alongside and lean over as best as I can.
Once I know what is left over after the wheelchair then I can start getting quotes for this second phase.
A 500+ pound powerchair (with me in it) has taken its toll on our carpeted floors. We wish to replace them with vinyl plank. This option looks to be able to provide the durability needed.
Having the power wheelchair has improved my life in that I am able to get around the house and I even go to the Farmer’s Market in the summer via the sidewalk. Traveling out of town is another thing. Currently we have a standard minivan. This requires me to stand up to get in and out of the front seat, as I previously mentioned, this is no longer an option. I will need a wheelchair accessible van that I can simply drive my wheelchair into without needing to stand up. These cost about double what a normal minivan costs but if I ever want to travel out of town to visit relatives and friends or even go with Denise anywhere, it would be very useful.
All of these things are a “now” or “soon to be” need/want. I have no idea what I may need in the future. This MD doesn’t come with a handbook, had that been the case, I might have tried to prepare better. Because of this, I am, humbly, asking for your help.
I am still working full time from home. I would like to continue working as long as possible. I enjoy interacting with people and being able to contribute. I am not receiving any state or federal assistance. I wish I didn’t have to ask, I like to do what I can on my own, but I need help so that I can continue to do as much on my own as possible.
