Soccer Without Borders- Nicaragua
Hi everyone!
I am excited to be volunteering in Nicaragua with Soccer Without Borders from January 6th-14th! Soccer Without Borders TEAM Camp in Granada provides opportunities for girls on and off the field through soccer, tutoring, workshops, team-building activities, and access to school scholarships, supplies, athletic clothing and equipment. It allows girls aged 6-20 to develop key skills and a sense of belonging, confidence, and growth.
When I learned about Soccer Without Borders I immediately connected with its mission and purpose to utilize sports as a way to build and develop friendships and confidence. I am so fortunate to be able to use my passion for soccer as a way to make a difference in people's lives!
48% of the population in Nicaragua lives below the poverty line, and a majority of youth drop out of school before graduating from secondary school. As a result there is a huge need for youth-centered programs that provide learning opportunites when they are not in school. Soccer Without Borders creates social networks that allow students to graduate, stay healthy, and reach their full potential.
During my time in Nicaragua, I will live in a small town with a local family allowing me to fully embrace the culture. I will experience their daily routine and will be able to coach and play soccer with the girls.
Prior to my trip, I am responsible for raising funds to support SWB Granada. In addition to monetary donations, I will be collecting any gently used soccer equipment and school supplies to bring with me. If you have any questions or want to hear more please let me know, or check out SWB's website at soccerwithoutborders.org.
Thank you so much!!
Pietra
