Trey's Story

Heroes come in all sizes and through all walks of life. My hero is my miracle baby, Immanuel "Trey" Shepherd. Trey was born in March 2001 with Spina Bifida, a condition in which the spine is not completely formed. This condition has also led to numerous complications and as a result in Trey's 13 years, he has had seven major operations yet remains resilient and full of joy. Trey has had many traumatic things happen to his body that even the strongest of adults would probably not be able to handle.
The most recent testament of his resilience was how he balanced all the obstacles we faced as a family. For three years, we were homeless and living in a motel after my husband lost his job. While at the motel Trey remained remarkably strong, never complained and was my inspiration, always singing and reminding me that “God’s got it.”
In time, we were blessed to find a new home, yet we have struggled to obtain a wheelchair accessible van. It has been a struggle to take Trey to his doctor's appointments as well as trying to keep him active in his many other interests including going to church, playing archery with the NJ Navigators, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. A van is not a luxury but a necessity for us, especially as Trey grow bigger.
Trey is my hero because I love the way he encourages others. I LOVE HIS HUGE HEART! He is always out for the underdog. I recall years ago when he was at school recess and someone was picking on another student. Even though Trey was physically challenged and on crutches he stood up for the child!!. As a parent that scared me completely. But Trey felt it was the right thing to do. That’s what a Hero does. They do the right thing despite the obstacles. Trey is my Hero and by the accounts of his friends, family and school community, they think so too.
