Meet the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio…
BGCSA targets youth in areas where services are needed most. According to the Center for Public Policy Priorities, the high school dropout rate in Bexar County in 2012 was 8.5% compared to 6.3% for the state. More than 60% of our members come from single-parent households and 75% of members' families use some form of federal assistance.
These youth experience almost every form of childhood problem possible: poverty, malnutrition, recurring health problems, and stressful, often unsupportive neighborhood and home environments. They face social pressures such as gangs, juvenile delinquency, child abuse/neglect, substance abuse and family violence.
Too many kids are falling behind in school—and life—before they even get started. Often times, this is not due to a lack of ability, but to the lack of access to basic tools. BGCSA tries to offset this disadvantage by providing notebooks, pens, pencils, backpacks, and other age-appropriate supplies, many times generously donated by local businesses.
For many at-risk youth, attending college is a distant dream. This was true for Karina . . . until she became a Club kid. Her father died when she was young, and her mother, who relies on Karina as a translator, is a shoemaker. Karina became a member in middle school—upon graduation, she received scholarships to offset the cost of UTSA. She is the first in her family to attend college and works part-time for BGCSA to help her mom.
The Drott Agencies is stepping up to help at-risk youth by holding a school supply drive. We are asking our wonderful clients to stop by our offices, say hello, and drop off any NEW school supplies that you can! You can also make a monetary donation here!
