Timbuk2 Academy, LLC is an extension of Timbuktu Academy, an early childhood learning institution. We aim to provide high quality education and care for children in the City of Trenton. We do this by combining both traditional and evidenced based teaching practices, along with utilizing essential learning materials, tools, principles, and a curriculum tailored to reflect traditional African culture and values. We enhance the learning experience through music, linguistics, dance, athletics, agriculture, nutrition, aquatics, art and meditation to name a few. We create the essential, non-bias learning environment required for our children to grow a strong sense of self-respect, self-discipline, self-love, self-awareness and self-expression. Our students are completely free to be themselves! The Timbuk2 experience, as it has done in the past, will equip its students with the necessary knowledge, skills and discipline required to advance towards their next level of education and beyond. It is these children who will be the leaders of our community. Timbuk2 Academy is prepared to move forward with its new team of passionate, certified, and experienced educators, nurses, social workers, health/nutrition specialists and child psychologists to ensure that our students and families receive the necessary support and services required to produce optimum outcomes.
WE LOVE EDUCATION!
Timbuktu Academy first opened its doors to the community in 1982, and was one of the only African-Centered early childhood learning institutions in Trenton, NJ. Despite being located in a heavy crime and drug populated area, the school was dominantly successful while in operation. The integrity of the institution, academic excellence and quality of education the children received, attracted families from the inner city and suburban areas. The academy was victorious while in operation and was awarded constantly throughout by various organizations. Many of the graduates furthered their education; obtaining bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees.
So why does a school this powerful and impactful close its doors? Timbuktu Academy was an independent institution running solely off of tuition. The school did not receive any financial assistance from the state or government, but still had to fulfill the requirements imposed by the State of New Jersey. These constant changes became very costly, yet the academy endured for eighteen years and finally decided to close its doors in June of 2000. This was a difficult decision, as the school benefitted so many in the community. However, despite the obstacle, the founders, Mr. and Mrs. Abdul-Raheem vowed that one day, the school would re-open. Well, this day has approached us and the torch has been passed onto their daughter Ayana, who has now taken up the challenge of re-opening Timbuktu Academy as Timbuk2 Academy LLC, by September of 2015. Ayana brings with her two decades of experience as an educator, performing artist, athlete, youth counselor, youth advocate, as well as bachelor and master’s degrees in Sociology and Early Childhood Education. She is currently employed by the City of Trenton, working in the Youth Services Unit at Trenton Police Department.
At this time, we URGENTLY need your help!!! When Timbuktu Academy closed everything was given away to the community. The sole purpose of this campaign is to assist with fulfilling minor cosmetic requirements imposed by the State of New Jersey(inspection) and to purchase supplies for the academy such as cots, books, writing utensils, paper, shelves, certified playground equipment, computers, tables we need EVERYTHING!!! WE ARE A REGISTERED BUSINESS and WE HAVE A LOCATION!!! Please invest in the Timbuk2 mission, by making a "love payment". Help us reach our goal of re-opening the school this year, so we can continue the legacy of providing another eighteen plus years of laying a solid educational foundation to the children in the City of Trenton and beyond.
