Tutoring Center For Low-Income

Donation protected

I am the Owner of The Learning Hub (www.learningathub.com), a non-profit organization on 253 Pleasant Street in Worcester. Recently, my business was selected by StartUp Worcester as a winner of the Chamber of Commerce Initiative for Young Entrepreneurs and we need the community's support to cultivate a great program for the local youth.

About Us:

The Learning Hub is a tutoring/activities center geared to enhance the one-on-one educational experience for grades k through 6 through the implementation of education major college student teachers earning credit for their education degree. With a low flat fee of $15 per hour, student can gain the competitive advantage needed to achieve academic success but to keep our price point at $15 and provide an exceptional service, we need to help of our local colleges. Tutoring services in Worcester average $65 per hour while weekend family activities can cost an upward of $80 for a family of four. We want to create a space that will combine both aspects of family life and student academic success. We also host activity labs on scheduled Saturdays such as Paint Labs, Creative Writing Classes and Science Hours and most recently, we are looking to expand The Learning Hub to home school families in the upcoming month(s).

The Learning Hub bridges the gap between higher education and early learning while maintaining a solid service for families experiencing financial hardship. The Worcester Public Schools lack proper funding, staff and resources to ensure the success of every student and we want to be the solution.

While we have managed to pay the rent, startup costs, and furniture costs for The Learning Hub during our startup process over the last 4 months, we have been unable to receive a grant to help with the cost of future rent, utilities and a part-time teacher.

Our goal of $10,000 will be used to help in the operational costs of the business, our grand opening collaboration with the neighborhood and education learning tools for the upcoming months. Our real goal is $20,000 but we would like to crowdfund at least $10,000 to get the program running.

Our recent win at StartUp Worcester has given us the opportunity to become members of the Chamber of Commerce for free along with some meeting space, if needed but the win did not get us funding options.

About Me:

I am a writer, married and with two daughters. This venture started because of my daughter's struggles with ADHD and her academic progress in school with reading comprehension. While the struggles were really with thes school itself and its lack of accommodations for a child in need of additional academic services, we hired a private tutor. The private tutor was at a personal expense of $50 per hour. While we searched for a more affordable tutoring option, we realized two things: 1. there were limited inexpensive tutors and 2. we were not the only parents looking for a little extra help.

Since then, we have become homeschool teachers to our daughter and she has been doing amazing! We are extremely happy for her academic success and want to offer the same success to other students with families unable to carry the financial burden of a private tutor.

The Learning Hub started because of our personal experiences with the public schools and private tutoring options but it ultimately led us to a great space to cultivate education and creative experiences.

Thank you!
