On June 14, my colleague Mitch and I, along with our bicycle built for two, will embark on a 70-day cross-country bike ride. Starting on the Pacific Coast in Oregon, we will pedal more than 4,000 grueling miles before we reach our destination—the Atlantic Ocean. This is an incredible challenge that will test both our physical and mental endurance, but this trip is not about us. We are biking in order to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
My four-year-old cousin, Cooper, passed away from a rare form of brainstem cancer in 2008. He fought the disease for 13 months, inspiring many people with his courage and bravery. Although Cooper was afforded the best medical care available, his chance of surviving longer than a year was a mere 3%. It seemed that despite the hospital’s greatest efforts, my family could only pray that Cooper would experience a miraculous recovery. Ultimately, he did not.
Over 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with some form of cancer every year. That means more than 1.5 million families are exposed to the tragic loss of a loved one like Cooper. This cause is important to us, and we would like to play our part in contributing to the cure. In addition to raising money, Mitch and I will be performing random acts of kindness for cancer patients across the nation. These acts will include delivering flowers, completing household chores, listening to life stories, and assisting families in any way that we possibly can.
Rather than spending our summer working to pay back our college debt or relaxing next to a lake, we’re choosing to give our time, money, and bodies to a great cause. The trip will cost over $3,500. Click on 'Donate Now' at the top of the page if you would like to help us cover our patient interactions and other expenses associated with our Ride Against Cancer.
