Peyton Sefick and Andrew Cunningham are 2 of the 12 power wheelchair soccer athletes that have been selected to play on Team USA at the FIFPA Power Wheelchair Soccer World Cup in 2015. Team USA has won the previous two World Cup titles and seeking their third consecutive victory. Funding for all of the athletes and staff of Team USA is the responsibility of the individuals for travel and lodging.
Andrew is a sophomore at Westhill High School and has been playing power soccer for nearly a decade. Peyton is a graduate of LeMoyne College and a consultant at the Burton Blatt Institute. He was on the power soccer National Team in 2011. Andrew and Peyton are teammates on their Syracuse based club team, CNY United. The two have played together for eight years and have pushed each other to get better along the way. In 2012, CNY United won the Champions Cup, a national championship!
Power soccer was the first competitive team sport designed for power wheelchairs users, and hosts a diverse section of individules with disabilities. It is played with four athletes per team on a regulation sized basketball court. Players have foot guards attached to the front of their chairs to dribble, push, kick, and pass the 13'' soccer ball down the court. One of the biggest challenges faced in this sport is that the next game or tournament is not down the street, or in the next town or across the state…typically the next game is a nine hour drive at a minimum. Four players. Four vans to carry power wheel chairs and athletes and screaming fans! Four hotel rooms. Food, gas, laughs, goals, and the list goes on...
So now to the gofundme part of this letter… This sport allows these men and women an opportunity to compete on a national and international level. It is expensive to travel.
